Tutorial: List Building For Writers (PDF)

What is this tutorial about?
As part of my author support agenda, I wrote a free tutorial on email list building for writers. While many authors “know” that they “should” have an email list, few of them actually do it for many reasons, most of them bogus. I address those in the tutorial, since knowing why to do something is often more important than knowing how.
How much does it cost?
It costs a whole whopping $0. Most of my visitors are my actual friends in real life, though as this site gets more and more popular, this isn’t gonna be true for much longer. It’s free because…
- I want as many people to actually do it, so that
- More writers can spend less time on marketing, and more time writing, which has the result of
- Making them happier, letting them do the thing they want to do most, but also
- Makes me happier because more people will come out with more stories, more often.
Plus, to build an email list right, you have to pay for a service that has a monthly fee of around $10 to start, but usually more like $20 – $30 per month.
Why should you believe me that this is a good thing to do?
You don’t have to do it if you don’t think it’s a good idea.
However, I started out self-published and made money the first month with this single technique plus Google AdWords to get visitors. I now have over 6000 members (not a lot, but a lot for my particular niche), and a micro publishing company that’s very profitable, though there is a limit to how much I make since the niche is so small.
I am building my list at a modest 10 – 20 members per month with very low traffic. If you have a semi-popular blog, there’s a good chance that you get more traffic than my 2-3k / month (all coming from organic search results.)
Why should I go through the trouble of setting up an email list? How powerful can this be — everyone has email lists. So what?
If you build and leverage your list properly, it can produce results for any kind of writer from casual blogger to professional published author. But, the key is knowing what to do with your list!
This is most people’s biggest mistake. I cover this in my tutorial, so I won’t get into it now. Just realize that this is the most powerful technique I know to get you more response from your readers, including:
- More comments on your blog
- More emails from fans
- More feedback, critiques, and suggestions from your friends, betas, or “wise readers”
- And, if you sell your stories, way more sales. Like, 5 to 10 times more sales, if you’re disciplined. I explain more in my tutorial with some real life math.
